Wizkid is a Nigerian singer and composer born on July 16, 1990, in Lagos State, Nigeria. He is widely regarded as the country’s top pop voice with millions of locals and international fans.

There is no doubt that Wizkid is among the top pop singers in Africa, this is evident in the wide acceptance of his music not just on this continent but also around the world.

Early Life

Born in the suburb of Surulere, Lagos State, Nigeria, Big Bird as fondly called by his crowds of followers was born on July 16, 1990 by a Muslim father and a Christian mother.

He attended Ijebu Ode Grammar School and was greatly influenced by King Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti, and Bob Marley.
Wizkid has always expressed his adoration for Nigerian music legend Fela Kuti.


What is today known as Wizkid or Starboy started with Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E).
The singer a record deal with E.M.E in 2009, and he launched his debut project, Superstar, featuring tracks such as Don’t Dull, Holla at Your Boy etc.

His Superstar album brought him nothing but fame and quick popularity.

Ayo, his self-titled second studio album, was released in September 2014. In support of the album, six singles were released, one of which was “Jaiye Jaiye.”

Wizkid waved goodbye to E.M.E after his contract expired.
He gained international recognition in 2016 after collaborating with Drake on the hit single “One Dance,” which topped the charts in 14 countries in addition to the US Billboard Hot 100.

Wizkid became the first Afrobeats artist to be honoured by Guinness World Records because the song smashed many records.

He signed a multi-album contract with RCA Records in March 2017, where he released his third studio album, Sounds from the Other Side, my later that year.

Five tracks were released to promote the album, one of which was “Come Closer” with Drake.
