Just recently, Warner Bros. announced that they will no longer release the part two of Dune until next year. The initial released date was November 3, this year. The new release date is March 15, 2024. Having known that Dune 2 is delayed, you might be interested in knowing why producers and distributors of the film made the decision.
Many film lovers have long been in anticipation of the part 2 of the film. And now that its release date is pushed to next year, one can imagine their disappointment. But who is to blame?
In film production, things that cause disappointment to film lovers, happen. Some of these include; a ban on a film or a sudden change in a film’s release date.
‘Dune 2’ delayed because of this
Currently, there are ongoing labor strikes in Hollywood. The two labor associations involved in the strikes are; Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). The WGA strike began on May 1, and that of SAG-AFTRA began on July 1.
These strikes undoubtedly caused disruptions in the American film industry. This is because most critical staff who contribute to the making of these films, are observing the strike. It is mandatory in most labor associations that all members partake in strike actions. Refusal to partake is often seen as betrayal.
Therefore, it is obvious that Dune 2 is delayed due to the current disruptions in Hollywood which is caused by the strikes.
Dune and its part one
Warner Bros. released the first part of the film on October 22, 2021, in the United States. This was weeks after it premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, in September of the same year.
Denis Villeneuve directed the film. It stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, and Javier Bardem.
Dune is based on the first half of the 1965 novel, Dune, by Frank Herbert. It tells the story of Paul Atreides, a young man who is destined to become a leader in the fight for control of Dune. In the novel, Dune is a desert planet that is the only source of spice, a valuable and powerful drug.
Dune’s first part was a huge box office success. It grossed over $400 million worldwide in just months after its release. The film also received ten Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
