The military junta that is currently leading the West African nation of Niger, has appointed a new prime minister to replace Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou who’s in exile currently following the July 26 coup. The junta, on August 8, appoint Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine to serve as the new PM. So who is Ali Lamine Zeine?
Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine is a Nigerien politician and economist. He was Niger’s Minister of the Economy and Finance from November 2002 to February 2010. Currently, he is the PM of the military-ruled Niger.
How old is he
The politician was born in Zeine, Niger in 1965. He’s therefore, between the ages of 58 and 59. The exact age is uncertain because of lack of information on the birth day and month.
His educational background
Zeine holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Paris-I Panthéon-Sorbonne and a PhD in Economics from the University of Aix-Marseille.
Zeine’s work background
After graduating from university, Zeine worked as a financial analyst at the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) from 1992 to 1995. He then joined the World Bank, where he worked as an economist from 1995 to 2002.
In 2002, President Mamadou Tandja appointed Zeine to serve as Director of his cabinet. A year later in October 2003, the president promoted him by appointing him to serve as Minister for the Economy and Finance. While a finance minister, Zeine played a key role in securing debt relief for his country, from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
Unfortunately, Zeine was forced to resign as finance minister in February 2010, following a military coup that ousted President Tandja. He was subsequently placed under house arrest for several months by the coupist. In 2011, he was appointed as the representative of the African Development Bank (ADB) in Chad. He served in this role until 2016.
From August 8, 2023, Zeine would be the Head of Government of the Nigerien junta. The junta tasked him to lead the country’s transition to democracy. He has pledged to work to improve the economy, fight corruption, and promote peace and security in Niger.
