Many have heard of lawyer Wafula Chebukati, but unfortunately, not much is known about his wife, children, age and net worth. In this article, however, we’ve delved into a part of the life of the renowned legal luminary.
Who is Wafula Chebukati?
Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati is a Kenyan lawyer who served as the chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from January 2017 to January 2023. He was appointed to the position by former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
The legal expert was born in Bungoma County, Kenya, in 1961. He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Laws degree from the Kenya School of Law. For decades, he practiced as private attorney for various clients.
Chebukati’s tenure as IEBC chairman was marked by controversy. He was accused of bias in the 2017 and 2022 presidential elections. In 2017, he declared then president, Uhuru Kenyatta, the winner of the election, despite several allegations of irregularities. However, following weeks of legal tussles, the country’s Supreme Court overturned the results and ordered a new election. Again, in 2022, Chebukati declared William Ruto the winner of the election, despite allegations of vote-rigging. Raila Odinga, the main opposition candidate, challenged the results in court. Unfortunately for Raila, and fortunately for Ruto, the Supreme Court upheld Chebukati’s declaration.
He retired from the IEBC in January 2023, and has since become critical of the government, accusing it of interfering with the independence of the electoral body he once led.
