Veteran South African Rugby player, Theuns Stofberg, has died in the early hours of Wednesday, August 23. He was 68. The Springbok forward died as a result of injuries he sustained in an accident two days earlier.

Who is Theuns Stofberg

Born on June 6, 1955, Marthinus Theunis Steyn Stofberg made his Springbok debut against the All Blacks in 1976. He went on to play 21 Tests, scoring six tries. He was captain of the Springboks in four Tests, including the first Test on the infamous 1981 tour of New Zealand.

Stofberg started his provincial career playing for Free State while he was still studying at the University of the Free State. When he was called up for his conscription he was moved to Pretoria where he started playing for Northern Transvaal, currently called the Blue Bulls.

Stofberg was born in Villiers,Β Orange Free State, South Africa, to a white minority family.

He also attended the popular Grey College in Bloemfontein, one of the strongholds in South African rugby.

In 1984, he retired from rugby and practiced physiotherapy until 2008. He stopped the practice following a Churg Strauss syndrome diagnosis. He later started a travel agency where he organized and took tour groups abroad.

The veteran rugby player died from the many injuries he sustained in an accident on Monday, August 21. According to reports, the accident occurred on the Koelenhof road, outside Stellenbosch, South Africa. He was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately, passed away two days later.

The head-on collision, which involved three cars, also claimed the life of a 66 years old man.

Reactions to Stofberg’s death

As usual, the death of famous people often spark reactions on both traditional and social media, and Stofberg’s demise is no exception.

A lot of reactions and tributes have been pouring in since the Springbok legend died.

The President of SA Rugby, Mark Alexander, in a statement, said; “To say Theuns Stofberg made an immense mark on South African rugby in a difficult time in the history of our game, would be somewhat of an understatement.”

A Twitter (now X) user, Jean Alberts, described him as a “monster” he grew up watching and admiring. He further opined that Stofberg would be a top-rated player in current times.

“…grew up watching him at Newlands, he would have been a 100 cap Bok in current times. …Was a monster!!”
