Steve Wright Education and Early Career

Wright attended Eastwood High School for Boys, located close to Southend-on-Sea, Essex, where he started a radio programme that he carried out over the stock cupboard’s speaker system.

At the early 1970s, he began working for the BBC as a returns clerk at the Gramophone Library at Egton House, which was located across from Broadcasting House in London.

He left the company in 1976 to begin hosting radio shows at Thames Valley Radio Radio 210 in Reading, Berkshire. Wright’s big break came when he had his own nightly show on Radio Luxembourg in 1979.

On January 5, 1980, Wright began working for BBC Radio 1, taking over a Saturday evening position. Later that year, he moved to Saturday mornings.

In 1981, Wright transitioned to daytime radio alongside Steve Wright in the Afternoon, and he went on to establish the zoo format in the UK.

In 1994, Wright and his Posse made the switch to The Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Due to disagreements with BBC Radio 1 management and a decline in ratings, he left the Breakfast Show in 1995. Around this time, a lot of the more well-known DJs started to leave or were fired.

In 1995, Wright was hired by the brand-new Talk Radio station to host a Saturday morning show.

Born in Greenwich on August 26, 1954, Stephen Richard Wright grew up in South London’s New Cross. His brother was named Laurence. Richard, their father, was the manager of the Trafalgar Square Burton’s store.
