A Glance at Steve William Marsh Life

Marsh was thought of as an inspirational player, one whose fearlessness on the pitch often served as an example to his teammates. The influence of the new captain-coach as a player and motivator was cemented when he guided the East Fremantle Sharks to their first flag in eleven years and received a premiership salary “bonus” in 1957.

For the first time since the end of World War II, his old team, South Fremantle, failed to make it to the championship game.

It’s likely, though, that his vocal ability cost him some notoriety. Hall of Famer John Todd thought that although Marsh only won one Sandover Medal in his career, his habit of back chatting umpires probably cost him several more.

In 1995, Marsh became the first member of the Fremantle Football Club’s Fremantle Football Hall of Legends. He was admitted to the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2005 and given the title of Legend. Additionally, he is a part of the Hall of Champions of the Western Australian Institute of Sport.
