Who is Steve Scalise?
Steve Scalise is an American politician and the representative for Louisiana’s 1st congressional district. From 2019 to 2023, he was the House Minority Whip. Scalise is in his tenth term in the House, having served since 2008.
Scalise was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Tulane University. Before entering politics, he worked as a software developer and marketing executive.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise has been diagnosed with blood cancer and is presently undergoing treatment.
“After a few days of not feeling like myself this past week, I had some blood work done. The results uncovered some irregularities and after undergoing additional tests, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a very treatable blood cancer,” Scalise said in a statement.
Moreover, “I have now begun treatment, which will continue for the next several months. I expect to work through this period and intend to return to Washington, continuing my work as Majority Leader and serving the people of Louisiana’s First Congressional District,” he said.
However, Scalise, 57, is the House’s second-highest-ranking Republican after Speaker Kevin McCarthy. He is a key figure in the House GOP conference and has long been viewed as either McCarthy’s successor or a rival.
