Who was Steve Roden?
Steven Bryan Roden was born in Los Angeles on April 27, 1964. His extended family, including his parents, Susan and James Roden, filled his childhood with art, architecture, music, and travel. Steve began his musical career at the age of 15 while attending Beverly Hills High School, when he formed the punk rock band Seditionaries (1979-1982) with Steve Graham and David Bornstein.
Steve Roden was a contemporary American artist and musician who worked in both sound and visual art. Lowercase music, a musical style in which small and normally unnoticed sounds are magnified to produce complex and rich soundscapes, was credited to him as a forerunner.
Roden attended the California Institute of the Arts and the University of California to study art. He began making sound installations and performances that explored the link between sound and space after graduating.
Moreover, Steve began working on his lowercase music method in the early 1990s. He would make delicate and often inaudible sounds with everyday devices such as fans, radios, and computers. These noises would then be amplified and processed to create intricate and immersive soundscapes.
Roden’s art has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide. He’s also worked with other artists including Laurie Anderson and John Cage. He received the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists prize in 2006.
