Divine Ikubor, known professionally as Rema, is a Nigerian rapper, singer and songwriter, born on May 1, 2000, in Benin City, Edo, Nigeria.
Remi Boy, as fondly called by fans, is a multi-award-winning young celebrity who has achieved incredible success in the music industry in a relatively short period of time since his breakthrough with the song “Dumebi.”
Rema was born into a Christian family.
He completed his primary and high school education in Edo State.
It was in secondary school, that he began singing and rapping.
Church also played a crucial role in his early musical experiences. That was were he began making frequent rap performances with pals.
At the age of 14, he had acquired enough popularity in the church to be named ‘rap nation leader’ by the congregation, and he began coaching other young rappers.
Despite losing both his father and his older brother at the age of 15, his love for music helped him persist through the ups and downs that life threw at him.
He was influenced by artists such as Michael Jackson and 2Face, as well as gospel singers such as Frank Edwards and TB1. He was also influenced by the era of Mo’ hits.
Rema’s career took a different turn after he posted a freestyle for the afro-pop musician D’Prince’s hit ‘Gucci Gang’.
The single featured Davido and Don Jazzy, in February 2023.
Impressed with what he saw, D’Prince invited Rema from Benin City to Lagos and introduced him to the Mavin Records family.
Rema signed a record deal on March 22, 2023, with D’Prince’s Jonzing World, a division of Mavin Records.
He launched his first EP, Rema, in 2023, and it reached the top spot on Apple Music Nigeria. His official first song, “Iron Man,” off his self-titled debut EP, captures the sense of wonder that comes from encountering something extraordinary but remarkable.
Rema’s ‘Iron Man’ also made Barack Obama’s 2023 Sure Playlist, ranking 42 out of 44 songs that Obama and his wife were listening to in the summer of 2023.
Drake, Jay Z, Beyonce, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Frank Sinatra, Rihanna, DJ Khaled, and Robin Thicke were among the stars on the playlist.
Rema made history in June 2023 when he became the first Nigerian musician to premiere top tracks on Apple Music.
Rema has received numerous prizes since his debut in the Nigerian music industry, including Next Rated and a nomination for Viewer’s Choice at the 13th edition of The Headies.
Rema has amassed a fortune thanks to the number of streams and endorsement deals he has secured.
With a net worth of over $1 million, he is one of Nigeria’s and Africa’s youngest-richest musicians.
