Anticipations are high. Fans, entertainment lovers cannot wait for the release of Michael Jackson’s biopic which is about to become one of next year’s cinema blockbusters.
The film will be directed by no other than Antoine Fuqua, who is already on standby to begin shooting.
As we speak, few details are known about the film, although the director himself has been in charge of unveiling who will play the main characters from the life of the King of Pop.
The director is assembling an all-star cast for his upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, tentatively titled simply Michael.
The film aims to track the life of the late King of Pop, portraying his early days as a member of family group the Jackson 5 alongside his siblings through to his career-defining triumphs as a solo artist.
Michael will trace both Jackson’s triumphs and tragedies as it examines both his personal struggles and his most iconic performances.
While Fuqua stands as the director, John Logan will be credited for the script.
The movie is currently in production with Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International slated to release it on April 18, 2025.
Let’s take a look at the cast and their real-life counterparts:
Who will play Michael Jackson?
It is one of the roles that can make an actor.
The director is all out for this project. He has picked Jaafar Jackson, nephew of Michael Jackson to bring the King of Pop to life.
Fuqua had no doubts, he is confident that no other person can portray the role better than Jaafar.
Jaafar on the other hand, has already shown some images on his Instagram.
“It’s incredibly exciting to see Jaafar bring Michael to life. There was a great spiritual connection when I met him, I noticed that he has a natural ability to emulate him, as well as having great chemistry with the camera,” the said.
In another interview, Fuqua said, “It’s uncanny how much he’s like Michael, sounds like him, dances like him, sings. It’s really uncanny.
Graham King, who is a fantastic producer, found him, and introduced him to me, and I was blown away.”
Who will play Michael Jackson’s mother?
The bond between Jackson and his loving mother was quite notable, and will take high level of experience to bring it to life.
This leading role will be carried by a much more internationally recognized actor. Her name is Nia Long, who has starred in other films such as ‘The Best Man’, ‘Big Momma’s House’ and ‘Are We There Yet?’.
Fuqua is delighted with this addition for the role of Katherine Jackson.
This is the director’s assessment of what she can bring to the film:
“I’m excited to work alongside her as she pours everything she has into the role of Katherine Jackson: a woman who was the glue of the family, a rock and the heart of the Jackson family during its best and most turbulent times,” Fuqua said.
According to Long in a statement, “Katherine Jackson is an incredible pillar of strength and grace for the entire Jackson family,”
“As a mother, she was selfless and endured forces beyond her control yet still managed to help build a legacy beyond measure. I am honored to bring her voice to the screen and share Michael Jackson’s story with audiences everywhere.”
Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson
Fresh off his Oscar nomination for Rustin, Colman Domingo is booked and busy, including as the notorious Jackson patriarch.
Joe Jackson has long remained a controversial figure, this is due to his reputation as a focused man.
“Not only am I fortunate to have a rich, complex, and flawed character to portray in Joe Jackson, but I also have a front-row seat for Jaafar’s incredible transformation,” Domingo said.
One question lingers, will this movie secure him his second Oscar?
Only time will tell.
Juliano Krue Valdi as young Michael
Michael will cover the entire span of Jackson’s life from his days as a child star up to his untimely death at age 50.
The difficulty in finding someone to embody the preternaturally talented young Michael is one that cannot be ignored. However Fuqua did it.
Fuqua found his boy in 9-year-old Juliano Krue Valdi.
Valdi has been sharing videos of himself dancing to Jackson’s music for the last five years and has gathered over 150,000 Instagram followers in the process.
Everything looks set for the King of Pop biopic to hit theatres in April 2025.
