Who was Lawrence Sifuna?
Lawrence Sifuna was born on January 23, 1946. He was a member of the Orange Democratic Movement political party and became an MP on the party’s ticket.
Sifuna was first elected to Parliament as a representative for the then larger Bungoma South constituency, in 1979. He served until 1988, when he lost the seat to former North Eastern Provincial Commissioner, Maurice Makhanu.
However, in Sifuna recaptured the seat in 1992 during Kenya’s first multi party general election which saw the late politician elected as MP on the ticket of the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy–Asili (FORD–Asili).
He was among the left-wing MPs in the 1980s, popularly known as the seven bearded sisters, who persistently attacked Attorney General Njonjo, and the government of Daniel arap Moi for policies they claimed undermined the rights of Kenyans.
Hon. Sifuna attended Sang’alo and Nalondo Intermediate Schools before moving to Mariri College in Uganda, where he sat for the Cambridge General Certificate of Education (CGCE) examination.
The late MP was a fully trained chartered accountant, and was a Fellow of both Chartered Accountants (FCA) and the Association of International Accountants (AIA).

According to Edwin, Lawrence’s death occurred whilst he was “receiving treatment at an Eldoret Hospital following a stroke he suffered a few days ago,” he wrote.
