Ortiz attended Luis Hernaiz Verone High School in Canovanas, Puerto Rico, after being born in Río Piedras. Ortiz went at Ranger College in Ranger, Texas, and Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas. The Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the 35th round of the 1988 Major League Baseball Draft.

The years that Ortiz’s career lasted were 1988–2005. He played for eight seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, five with the Kansas City Royals, two with the Chicago Cubs, and one with each of the Washington Nationals, Colorado Rockies, Tampa Bay Rays, and Texas Rangers organizations.

For the Kansas City Royals in 1998, 2000, and 2001, Ortiz made 86 appearances in Major League baseball. In 2002, he participated in seven games with the Texas Rangers.

Managerial Career
