Dattajirao Krishnarao Gaekwad popularly known as Datta Gaekwad, was an Indian cricketer born on 27 October 1928 and passed away on 13 February 2024.

He toured the West Indies in 1952–53 and England in 1952–1959, and he played in eleven Test matches. During the 1959 tour, he led the Indian team as captain.

Anshuman Gaekwad, an opener for India, was the son of Gaekwad. He was the deputy comptroller of the Baroda state and a distant relative of the Baroda royal family.

Born on September 23, 1952, Datta Gaekwad’s son, Anshuman Dattajirao Gaekwad is a former cricket player and the former coach of the Indian national team.

He participated in 15 One Day Internationals and 40 Test matches. Datta Gaekwad, his father, represented India in Test cricket as well.

Known for his defensive approach to pace bowling, Gaekwad prioritised defence when West Indian pace bowlers dominated the globe of cricket.

He went by The Great Wall for short. On December 27, 1974, he played his first Test match against the West Indies in Kolkata. On December 27, 1984, he played his final Test match against England in Kolkata.

Gaekwad, a right-handed batsman, amassed 1985 runs from 40 Test matches at an average of 30.07, including two hundreds and ten half-centuries. In Jalandhar in 1982–1983, he achieved his greatest Test score of 201 against Pakistan. His 671-minute inning serves as an example of his concentration and patient pitching technique.

Anshuman Gaekwad took an early retirement from cricket in 2000 and went on to work for GSFC (Vadodara). Right now, he resides in Vadodara, Gujarat, India.

The highest distinction bestowed upon a former player by the BCCI, the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, was given to him in June 2018.
