Carter in Colditz and Steel in Sapphire & Steel are two of his other significant television performances. Beginning in 2003, McCallum’s appearance as NCIS medical examiner Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard in the American television series NCIS reawakened his international stardom. McCallum was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the second son of orchestral violinist David McCallum Sr. and cellist Dorothy (née Dorman). His family relocated to London when he was three years old so that his father could conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Moreover, he was evacuated back to Scotland early in the Second World War, where he stayed with his mother at Gartocharn beside Loch Lomond. McCallum received a scholarship at University College School, a boys’ independent school in Hampstead, London, where he played the oboe after being encouraged by his parents to pursue a career in music.
Also, McCallum began doing boy voices for the BBC radio repertory company in 1946. At the age of 17, he appeared as Oberon in an open-air production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Play and Pageant Union.
However, he enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 1951 and studied acting there for two years. McCallum began his professional acting career in British films and television after graduating from RADA. He made his film debut in Ill Met by Moonlight in 1956, followed by a minor role in The Secret Place in 1957.
