David Harewood was born on December 8, 1965, in Small Heath, Birmingham, England. He grew up in the West Midlands and attended St. Benedict’s Junior School and Washwood Heath Comprehensive School. Harewood studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and graduated in 1989. He struggled with mental health issues, including bipolar disorder, which he publicly disclosed in 2012. Harewood has been an advocate for mental health awareness and has spoken openly about his experiences. He has been married twice; his first marriage ended in divorce, and he has two daughters from his first marriage. In 2013, Harewood remarried to his wife Kirsty Handy. They have one child together. He is an avid supporter of the Birmingham City Football Club and often attends their matches. Harewood is also involved in various charitable endeavors, including supporting organizations that focus on mental health and education.

Known for his roles in “Homeland” and “Supergirl,” Harewood is succeeding Sir Kenneth Branagh, who served for nine years. Cynthia Erivo, acclaimed for her role in the upcoming “Wicked” film, will join as vice president. The actor, originally from Birmingham, commented, “Having been a student at Rada myself and having encountered both the triumphs and challenges of this profession, I believe I can offer invaluable guidance to these aspiring individuals. Sir Kenneth expressed gratitude for the privilege of serving Rada, describing it as an honor. He also expressed excitement in welcoming David Harewood and Cynthia Erivo to their respective new positions. Established in 1904, Rada stands as one of the UK’s oldest drama schools.
