Early Career

Frye attended St. Mary’s High School in Phoenix, Arizona, and according to Hoop Scoop and Fast Break Recruiting Service, he was ranked as the 98th and 13th centre in the country, respectively, during his time there.

His stats for coach David Lopez’s team in 1999–2000 as a junior included 15 points, 12 rebounds, nine blocks, and six assists per game. Under his guidance, the team finished 26–7, advanced to the Class 5A state tournament semifinals, and was ranked No. 19 in the country by USA Today.

During his senior year in 2000–01, Frye led St. Mary’s to a 30–3 record and the 2001 Class 5A state championship. He averaged 22 points, 15 rebounds, six blocks, and three assists per game. He went on to win Player of the Year awards from the Arizona Republic and Arizona Gatorade, and he was selected to the fourth team of both the Parade All-America and McDonald’s All-America teams.

Frye was a vital member of the Arizona Wildcats’ 2001–02 squad as a freshman. He began 25 of 34 games after forcing his way into the starting lineup by late December and remained there for the duration of the year.

Frye won Pac-10 Player of the Week on February 27, 2003, and was a honorable mention All-Pac-10 pick as a sophomore in 2002–03.
