Alexei Navalny was a Russian opposition politician who has passed away in prison on Friday, February 16. His death has sparked a lot of condemnations of the Vladimir Putin-led Russian government which has haunted the veteran journalist for years. In this article, we’ll delve into the cause of death of Alexei Navalny.

Navalny was a fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his government. He rose to prominence through his investigations into corruption among high-ranking officials, exposing embezzlement and abuse of power.

The 47-year-old YouTuber founded the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), which conducted investigative journalism and published exposés on corruption within the Russian government.

In announcing his death which happened while still in the IK-3 penal colony in Kharp, about 1,900 km (1,200 miles) north east of Moscow, prison authorities say the political prisoner was having a walk when he suddenly became unwell.

“On February 16th of this year, in the colony No. 3, convict Navalny A.A. felt unwell after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness. Medical workers from the institution immediately arrived and an emergency medical team was called,” a press release from the Federal Penitentiary Service revealed.

The statement further indicated that “All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, but did not yield positive results. Emergency doctors confirmed the death of the convict.

The cause of death of Navalny has yet to be revealed by the authorities. In the statement that announced the politician’s death, the prison authorities indicated that the cause of death was being determined by health officials.

“Emergency doctors confirmed the death of the convict. The causes of death are being established,” part of the release sated.

Meanwhile, Nalvany has long been battling ill health since his incarceration in January 2021, not long after surviving an assassination attempt on his life. He received treatment in Germany and returned to Russia where he was immediately apprehended and put behind bars.
